For small companies, it is extremely important to ensure that costs in all parts of the business are properly managed and controlled. IT networks tend to grow in an ad-hoc fashion, with no real planning or supervision.

While this may be manageable with only 2 or 3 machines, it can easily become far more complex and unmanageable with as few as 4 or 5 machines networked together. The situation is worsened without a qualified IT administrator looking after your network.

Issues such as backup, data security, shared resources and network reliability will often be swept under the carpet, with the beliefs such as “we are too small to benefit from external help”, or “my computer has never failed before, why should I worry about it?” being all too common.
